If you or someone you love is considering rehab for drug or alcohol problems, you are probably curious as to what the success rate is. While it is unique to each individual, there are some guidelines that can help steer you in the right direction.
First, people who are not forced to go but go by their own free will are more apt to succeed. When people are forced into rehab, they do not always have the attitude they need to stay clean when they are free to go home. They spend their entire stay at the facility waiting to leave. Forcing someone to go may help some, but it is more likely that they will get the most out of the program if they choose to go by themselves. That is why it is better to work with an individual to convince them to go as opposed to placing an ultimatum on them or threatening them in some other way.
Those who stay for the entire duration are also more likely to stay away from drugs and alcohol when they return home. Sometimes when people are in treatment, they start to feel better half way through. They believe that they are “cured” and are good to go home. The problem with this is that they have not learned all the skill they should have to stay away from the drugs and alcohol. They may also not have received the information as to where they can go for help when they are on their own. That is why those who stay until their doctors deem them well enough to go have a higher success rate than those who discharge themselves before it’s time.
To ensure success, many people who have stayed clean also incorporate other forms of treatment or support long after they leave rehab. Unfortunately, one bought of rehab will not likely give someone with an addiction everything that they need to stay healthy. They may need to go through a rehab program several times. However, they may be able to succeed by utilizing other resources in the community. Ongoing therapy, support groups, having a sponsor, and much more make it easier for someone to succeed after rehab because they have someone to be accountable to and people that are willing to help.
The success rates of rehab are difficult to determine. Basically, you will get out of it what you make of the whole experience. If you go into it hoping for the best and trying your hardest, there is a much better chance that you will live a clean life when you leave.
